When an environmental course turns into a passion-project

This project was created in conjunction with the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism course by the University of Copenhagen and advised by Dr. Flemming Konradsen

Frame-132-1
Introduction

The tourism industry is expecting record-breaking numbers in the post-covid world. Tourism takes a heavy toll on the local environment and local communities. While I was recently planning a family trip to Costa Rica, I was pleasantly surprised by the emphasis on eco-tourism and sustainability. However, I only discovered this via loads of research and couldn't help but think that this great concept shouldn't be so unorganized. Tourism is a massive industry that will continue to grow, but the international community must realize that we must rethink how we travel domestically and internationally.

Brief

Create a product within the realm of sustainable tourism with a corresponding visual identity and UX/UI framework.

Problem + Opportunity

Problem We used Zanzibar as a study case during this course. Like other tourist-dependent areas, Zanzibar faces similar problems with environmental changes, overpopulation, and cultural differences of locals and visitors.

42%

Seeing the unsustainable effects of tourism in their home country.

32%

Feeling guilty about the impact their vacation has had on the environment.

31%

Travelers who have not considered an eco-friendly stay because they were unaware of their existence.

4 Out of 5

Tourists considered not returning to Zanzibar due to the land waste they witnesses during their vacation.

87%

A large majority of global travelers say they want to travel sustainably.

68%

Of travelers intend to stay in an eco-accommodation.

41%

Going out of the way to find a local restaurant that only uses local ingredients.

41%

Opting for a stay that is certified eco-accommodation over a traditional hotel.

Solution

What if a non-profit partnered with local communities and independent owners, which promoted eco-friendly tourism? Rather than creating another booking site, I explored the idea of a platform that would promote a business or place and forward the user to their preferred booking method. Furthermore, I used Costa Rica as an example of a travel destination with the intention that users could filter various domestic cities and other international countries.
